Documents needed for a learner permit in Texas (2026)
Updated October 2026
Document requirements are set by the DPS and change over time. This page describes the categories that applicants typically bring to the office — the exact, current list lives on the DPS website.
Three categories most DPS offices ask for
- Identity — proof of full legal name and date of birth. Common examples: US passport, certified birth certificate, permanent resident card, certificate of citizenship or naturalization. The DPS site publishes the exact list of accepted documents and how many you need to combine.
- Social Security — your SSN, usually verified from a card, W-2, or pay stub. If you are not eligible for an SSN, the agency asks for a letter of ineligibility from the SSA.
- Texas residency — documents (often two) showing your current Texas address. The agency publishes which document types they accept and how recent they need to be.
If you are under 18
Most states require a parent or legal guardian to come in person, sign the application, and show their own identification. Some states also ask for school enrollment or a minimum number of practice hours — confirm the exact rule on the DPS site.
Practical tips
- Bring originals, not copies.
- If any document is in a foreign language, ask the DPS ahead of time whether a certified English translation is required.
- Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment so the clerk has time to verify each item.
- If your legal name differs across documents (for example after marriage), bring the document that explains the change.
